“Flicker”
Control Room, Los Angeles
March 15th – April 28th, 2013
“Flicker” at Control Room in Los Angeles, presents a monochrome theme as its basic premise. Organized by writer and curator Jan Tumlir, in the center of the exhibition stands a large structure, similar to a cage with work hung on its outside surfaces. The structure seems to indicate something white walls could never promise – the stark cooperation between organizer, gallery, and artist. It seems as if there is a lack of integrity given to the work but instead a statement rises on a conversation on whats light and dark; that what gives shape does not mean solid. The work’s physical and temporal existence is put to question in this transient space – what is now known as “flickering”.
Evidenced by some of the work, the monochromatic theme considers reductive processes. One piece, a photographic work by Brendan Fowler, crashed in and through its framed self, perhaps to propose a path to art’s enlightenment.
This exhibition is organized by Jan Tumlir. This group show features works by Justin Beal, Phil Chang, Eduardo Consuegra, Brendan Fowler, Mark Hagen, Nick Herman, Brian Kennon, Christopher Michlig, Katrina Umber, Kaari Upson, and Bobbi Woods.
