“Summoning Ghosts: The Art of Hung Liu”  opened last week on the 16th, and is currently on view till June 30th, 2013.  This exhibition is the first comprehensive survey of Hung Liu’s work, who is considered one of the most renowned Chinese painters working in the United States.  This exhibition consists of about 80 works including her personal ephemera helping develop a view into her identity, history, and the motivating factors to her practice.  “Summoning Ghosts: The Art of Hung Liu” is an investigation of her complex interactions between individual memory and history, and documentary evidence and artistic expression, among other themes.  Liu was born in Changchun China in 1948 where she experienced Maoist China and the transitions into the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution.  Her history is an amazing component to her work, and is a major contrast to the education she received in the United States at UC San Diego for her MFA.
