May 2, Burning in Water opens Frédéric Bruly Bouabré and Serge Attukwei Clottey, an exhibition pairing drawings by the late Ivorian artist Frédéric Bruly Bouabré (1923 — 2014) with recent sculptures by the Ghanian artist Serge Attukwei Clottey (b.1985). Frédéric Bruly Bouabré, born in Zépréguhé, West Africa, created drawings for more than half a century. His work was included in the Magiciens de la Terre exhibition (1979) at the Centre Georges Pompidou and Grande halle de la Villette in Paris, the Out of Africa exhibition (1992) at the Saatchi Gallery, and the Venice Biennale in 1993. Bouabré was again featured at the Venice Biennale in 2013. Serge Attukwei Clottey lives and works in Accra, Ghana. His ongoing Afrogallonism project employs “Kufuor gallons,” plastic containers named after John Kufuor, the second President of the Fourth Republic of Ghana; the containers were used to transport water during shortages throughout the president’s time in office. Clottey repurposes these containers, creating masks, paintings, and installations. Clottey is also the founder of Ghana’s GoLokal performance collective.
