March 25 – May 6, 2016
Reception: March 25, 6-9 pm
Gallery 16 presents The Small Spaces in Between, a solo exhibition by Jason Middlebrook. Middlebrook, who is based in New York and has not exhibited on the West Coast in over a decade, presents 20 of his signature “Plank” paintings. In this series, geometric abstractions are painted directly onto internally cut tree trunks, sourced from a mill in Hudson, New York, where the artist lives and works. Middlebrook’s abstraction is inspired by natural formations like geodes and crystals, as well as by military insignia, architecture, mathematics, and other less organic appearances of geometry and pattern. Middlebrook has recently exhibited at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art and Site Santa Fe.
