September 2—October 1, 2015
Opening September 2 at 871 Fine Arts, Unpacking My Library is a group exhibition with a focus on artists’s books, multiples, printed ephemera, and other materials designed for alternative dissemination, including works by Tauba Auerbach, Shannon Ebner, Wade Guyton, Jenny Holzer, Martin Kippenberger, Adam McEwen, Ryan McGinness, Jason Polan, Seth Price, Josh Smith, Christopher Wool, and others. The exhibition is curated by Jeremy Sanders of 6 Decades Books, a rare book and ephemera dealer who has recently relocated to the Bay Area from New York. The exhibition takes its name from an essay by Walter Benjamin, in which the theorist describes the process of moving his library, and the dramatic difference between the mundane experience of moving these objects and the potential experiences of enjoyment, excitement, and enlightenment they contain and provide. Sanders, having recently undertaken the process of relocating his library, presents a selection of artist-produced materials as a consideration of the state of artist multiples and their distribution.
