Art Basel
Miami Beach Convention Center, Miami Beach, FL 33139
December 4 – 7, 2014
Thursday, December 4, Art Basel opens to the public in Miami Beach, presenting a predictably impressive roster of galleries as well as a series of talks, conversations, performances, and other events. Art Basel is organized into nine sectors to accommodate the variety of creative pursuits concerned, including the Survey sector for the presentation of art historical projects, the Film sector for screenings, the Edition sector for prints and multiples, in addition to the central Galleries sector, which features 200 prominent modern and contemporary art galleries.
Wednesday, December 3, Art Basel hosts a free public opening from 8:30 – 10 pm as part of the exhibition’s Public sector. The opening includes live performances by Christian Falsnaes, Ryan Gander, Liz Glynn and Dawn Kasper, and Alix Pearlstein. Front, a participatory performance by Falsnaes, involves the cyclical destruction, spray-painting, and reassembly of a structure by the artist and the audience. The Shining, a performance by Pearlstein, includes actors wearing illumination panels, circulating amongst the audience and at times synchronizing the direction and concentration of the illumination to target specific artworks and other elements of their surroundings.
Saturday, December 6, Andrew McClintock (Publisher, Editor in Chief and Co-Founder of SFAQ) appears in conversation with Stefano Cernuschi, Head of Publications at Mousse Publishing, as part of the Art Basel Salon program. The discussion, “The State of Printed Magazines in the Digital Era,” is moderated by Sarah Douglas, Editor in Chief of ARTnews, and begins at 1 pm.
