Opening Thursday, January 23rd at Johansson Projects, Oakland is “Following,” a solo exhibition by Margo Wolowiec. In her exhibition at Johansson Projects, Wolowiec combines her large-scale woven canvasses with various smaller pieces in different stages of progress. This unorthodox set-up places the viewer somewhere between a gallery exhibition and an artist studio visit. Wolowiec’s handwoven textiles transform telematic imagery into ethereal and unreadable textures using a dye and sublimation ink process. There is something contradictory about the traditional, repetitive ritual of her practice and the quick, haphazard speed of the cyber-centric subject matter. Like embroidery made entirely of snags. These works channel cultural waste into something of cosmic relevance.
Opening Reception: Friday, February 7th, 2014. 5-8pm.
“Following” is on view through March 15th, 2014.
