Prints and Photographs presents prints made by Ruscha over forty years, along with rarely seen photographs the artist has made since 1959. Books & Co. presents artist books by Ruscha, alongside the work of more than 100 artists who have been influenced by his books including Dave Dyment, Mark McEvoy, Jonathan Monk, Amy Park, Louisa Vanleer, John Waters, and Theo Wujcik. Many of the books on view for Books & Co. are installed so that visitors can look through their pages. 2016 marks the fiftieth anniversary of Every Building on the Sunset Strip (1966), Ruscha’s iconic 25-foot long, accordion-style book.
Ed Ruscha and the Great American West is on view at the de Young Museum through October 9. The last issue of SFAQ (#24) included an interview with Ed Ruscha, now available online.
