Slabs
agnès b. galerie
50 Howard Street, New York NY 10013
March 26 – May 3, 2015

Now on view at agnès b. galerie, Slabs is an exhibition of new work by Pat McCarthy. You might know McCarthy from the excellent Satan Ceramics exhibition at Salon 94 late last year. For the exhibition at agnès b., McCarthy has created approximately twenty porcelain slabs, upon which the artist has transferred selections from zines—quick and dirty, intentionally ephemeral publications. The result is a far more permanent object that the original publishers ever attempted—an elevation of contemporary material in a new form that can literally stand the test of time. Also on view are a number of paintings created using denim and bleach, materials McCarthy employs in his care and keeping of pigeons. A sharp material contrast to the porcelain slabs on view, the bleach paintings require physical degradation to exist, and the process of their decomposition will continue.

Slabs remains on view through May 3.
