This weekend, Art Market San Francisco returns to Fort Mason for its fifth incarnation, featuring 65 galleries from near and far. The fair plays host to a series of panel discussions, where subjects range from Robert Motherwell’s Elegies to the future of street art. The fair’s ON-SITE program includes installations and artist projects by Brett Armory, Dana Hemenway, Guy Overfelt, Jon Bernson & Michael Falsetto-Mapp, Michael Buscemi, Sam Perry, Stephen Whisler, Walter Robinson, and Wanxin Zhang, as well as a pop-up shop by Lauren DiCioccio and Workshop Residence.

This year, Art Market is accompanied by two new and unconventional fairs. stArtup Art Fair departs from a traditional art fair model, exhibiting only unrepresented artists. 39 artists and 3 collectives will each occupy a room of the Hotel del Sol; selected artists pay a fee to participate, but keep 100% of art sales made during the event. The artists are selected by a jury including Janet Bishop (SFMoMA), Cathy Kimball (San Jose ICA), Walter Maciel (Walter Maciel Gallery), Heather Marx (Heather Marx Art Advisory), and artists Paul Mullins (also Professor of Art at SF State) and Hank Willis Thomas. A full (really full) schedule of events, including guided tours, performances, and panel discussions, can be found on the stARTup Art Fair website.

Parking Lot Art Fair, billed as a “rogue art happening,” will announce the event’s location at midnight on May 1st via social media – check the website linked below and also their Instagram account, @parkinglotartfair. The fair will occupy a space somewhere between stARTUp Art Fair and Art Market. More than 100 artists, including Anthony Discenza, Chris Lux, David Bayus, Jessica Flemming, Jenny Sharaf, Joey Enos, Luca Antonucci and David Kasprzak (Colpa Press), Mario Ayala, Sarah Thibault, and Todd Lavine, will participate, with a full list available on the Parking Lot Fair website. A panel discussion will feature John Zarobell, Amy Mutza, Maria Porges, Mark Van Proyen, and special guests.
