American Rainmaker: A Weather Opera: February 12, 7:30–9 pm
Love, Thunder: February 14, 2–4 pm
Chris Kallmyer concludes his two week project at Southern Exposure with performances this Thursday and Saturday. For Los Angeles Department of Weather Modification: Northern Bureau, Kallmyer and the LADWM have installed their exploratory headquarters in the gallery space. Kallmyer and other musicians from the LADWM create sonic works based on experiences of weather and the history of weather modification.
Thursday, February 12, Chris Kallmyer is joined by weather consultants Andrew Tholl and Archie Carey for American Rainmaker: A Weather Opera, a sonic celebration of legendary rainmaker Charles Hatfield, who took a seemingly functional and sometimes disastrous chemical recipe for rain with him to the grave in 1958. The concert incorporates experimental compositions for a chamber ensemble, weather reports, auto-tuned Motown, and a lecture on weather modification by Kallmyer. The performance begins at 7:45 pm.
Saturday, February 14, the LADWM hosts Love, Thunder, a Valentine’s Day celebration in the form of a love letter from precipitation to the people of San Francisco. “Thunder needs you and wants you back.” The performance begins at 2:15 pm.
