Sean Raspet
Residuals
Jessica Silverman Gallery
488 Ellis Street, San Francisco, CA
November 14 – January 3, 2015

Now on view at Jessica Silverman Gallery, Sean Raspet’s exhibition Residuals is a highly technical reflection on inhabited space and systems of material use through scientific analysis and re-presentation. A number of works occupy the gallery, revealing and adjusting aspects of the physical environment. A central work, Micro-encapsulated Surface Coating, was created by conducting studies on the air in Jessica Silverman Gallery over a week, collecting samples in specialized canisters, having these samples analyzed and concentrated, and applying the intensified product to gallery surfaces as a scratch-and-sniff emulsion. Also in the gallery, four gas cylinders contain nitrogen, oxygen, argon and carbon dioxide, slowly releasing these purified, standardized forms of elemental gases into the atmosphere of the gallery. To read more about Raspet’s treatment of the space, and to view some of the involved chemical analyses, please visit the website of Jessica Silverman Gallery.
