Andrew Kreps Gallery
537 West 22nd Street, New York, NY 10011
Reception: July 2, 6-8 pm
July 2 – August 15, 2014
Wednesday, July 2, Andrew Kreps gallery opens a new exhibition of work by Hito Steyerl. On view are two of Steyerl’s videos as well as a number of sculptural objects; Steyerl has also collaborated with Studio Markus Miessen to produce certain architectural interventions.
One of the videos, “How Not To Be Seen: A Fucking Didactic Educational .MOV File,” explores ideas of surveillance through the demonstration of fantastic and futile strategies for avoiding observation and identification. Filmed at the site of military-use photo calibration targets in the California desert, the artist proposes becoming smaller than a pixel, the personal use of green screen technology, and more. The other video, “Strike,” documents the breaking of a digital screen, drawing attention to the materiality of the viewing apparatus and the image.
The gallery hosts a reception July 2, from 6 – 8 pm.
The exhibition remains on view through August 15.
