Opening November 20th at Andrea Schwartz Gallery, San Francisco is “crosscurrent”, a solo exhibition featuring new paintings by Alex Couwenberg. The Los Angeles based painter’s new work explores process and moment through tightly controlled compositions of paint and mark making.  Couwenberg creates images that are inspired by the elements indigenous to his surroundings; the work references custom car culture, surfing, skateboarding, and music, with the sensibility of mid-century modernist design. Couwenberg is influenced by the visual language used by the hard edge geometric abstractionist, the Finish Fetish, and Light and Space artists who were influential during the 1950’s, 60’s, and 70’s in shaping the aesthetic of Los Angeles art.  Couwenberg turns these influences into harmonious compositions, reflecting the visual landscape of the world around him.

Opening Reception: Wednesday, November 20th, 2013. 5:30-7:30pm.
