Reception: February 18, 6-9 pm

February 18, Hauser Wirth & Schimmel opens Installations, 1994 – 2006, the first major Los Angeles exhibition of work by Jason Rhoades. Rhoades, whose installation work first achieved recognition in Europe and New York, was based in Los Angeles for the entirety of his career, up until his untimely death in 2006 at the age of 41. Rhoades’ work explicitly addressed religion, commerce, sex, and racial and gender stereotypes, offering these subjects for contemplation in the form of maximalist installation. The exhibition at Hauser Wirth & Schimmel presents six of his major works: ‘Swedish Erotica and Fiero Parts’ (1994); ‘My Brother/Brancuzi’ (1995); ‘The Creation Myth’ (1998); ‘My Madinah. In pursuit of my ermitage…’ (2004); ‘The Black Pussy… and the Pagan Idol Workshop’ (2005), and ‘Tijuanatanjierchandelier’ (2006). The exhibition also includes a video compilation of archival footage from The Estate of Jason Rhoades, including materials being released for the first time.
