Oblivious The Greek
The Hole
June 11 – July 24, 2016
312 Bowery, New York, NY 10012

Now on view at The Hole, Oblivious The Greek is an exhibition of new sculpture by Adam Parker Smith. The installation mimics a sculpture garden, with works arranged on rocks on top of graveled sections of gallery floor. These free-standing sculptures are humanoid in form, compositionally not unlike the classic Greek and Roman sculptures that their titles reference but materially quite current—the artist preserves mylar balloons with resin, fiberglass, steel, and aluminum, with this illusion of weightlessness and impermanence revealed on the visible opposite sides of the sculptures. Works hanging on the gallery walls serve as sections of vertical planting in this simulation of a sculpture garden, combining faux plants and flowers with less botanical materials: resin, steel, aluminum, simulated bronze, neon, jump rope, and faux cake.
