Opening on Saturday, January 18th at Krowswork, Oakland is “Surreal Nature,” the first gallery show in 40 years of the powerful Surrealist-tinged artist Sylvia Fein. “Surreal Nature” features paintings by the 94-year-old Fein, spanning seventy years of work. Fein was born in 1919 and began painting as a teenager in her home state of Wisconsin. She attended the University of Wisconsin at Madison and there was part of an influential group of painters that were loosely called the Midwest Surrealists; however Fein’s work was considered particularly radical for its Surrealist imagery, feminist themes, and quattrocento-influenced use of egg tempera paint.

Opening Reception: January 18th, 2014. 5-8pm.

“Surreal Nature” is on view through February 22nd, 2014.
